Economists Anthony Culyer and Alan Maynard Named Co-Recipients of the 2015 William B. Graham Prize For Health Services Research

Anthony (Tony) John Culyer, CBE, BA, Hon DEcon, Hon FRCP, FRSA, FMedSci, and Alan Maynard, OBE, BPhil, Hon DSc, Hon LLD, Hon MFPHM, MMEDSci, have been named the 2015 recipients of the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research. The Prize, awarded by The Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), will be presented on June 4, 2015, during the AUPHA Annual Meeting in Miami.
The Prize recognizes the contributions of health services researchers who have had a significant impact on the health of the public in one of three primary focus areas: health services management, health policy development, and healthcare delivery. The contributions of Professors Culyer and Maynard reflect all three of these attributes. An independent committee of past winners, distinguished academics, and internationally recognized researchers selects the recipient each year, and for the first time since 1992, co-recipients were awarded the Prize. The recipients have co-authored several papers and books on healthcare economics.
"Tony Culyer and Alan Maynard epitomize the greatness of William B. Graham and the Graham Prize itself," said Kyle Grazier, Richard C. "Their collaborations have netted major contributions to public health, and individually each has brought forth innovative health services research. The Graham Prize Selection Committee is thrilled to select Professors Culyer and Maynard for this distinguished award."
Tony Culyer is emeritus professor of economics at the University of York, England. He is a senior fellow at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto; adjunct scientist, Institute for Work and Health, Toronto; Chair, NICE International Advisory Group, London, England; and distinguished visiting scholar, University of the Wiwatersrand in South Africa. Culyer was the founding organizer of the world's oldest association of health economists, Health Economists' Study (HESG), in the United Kingdom. For 33 years, he was the founding co-editor, with Joe Newhouse, PhD, of Journal of Health Economics. The third edition of his The Dictionary of Health Economics (Edward Elgar) was published in 2014. Alan Maynard is an emeritus professor of health economics at the University of York. He is a graduate of the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and York in the United Kingdom. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) by the University of Aberdeen, Scotland in 2003, and an honorary Doctor of Law by the University of Northumbria in 2006. He taught economics at the University of Exeter (1968-71) before moving to York in 1971.
In 1977, Maynard was appointed founding director of the Graduate Programme in Health Economics at York. In 1983 he was appointed founding director of the Centre for Health Economics (CHE), a post he held until 1995. With the support of York colleagues such as Professor Alan Williams and Professor Tony Culyer, he led the development of CHE into a leading international health economics and policy centre. He is founding editor of Health Economics, one of the premier health economics journals.

Since 1986, The Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration have awarded the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research to recognize researchers who have made major contributions to the health of the public through innovative research in health services. The Prize honors the late William B. Graham, longtime chairman and CEO of Baxter International Inc., and is internationally regarded as the premier recognition for individuals conducting health services research. The Prize recognizes individuals who have had a significant impact on the health of the public in one of three primary focus areas: health services management, health policy development, and healthcare delivery.
