Canadian Business Overview
Baxter's BioScience business is a leading manufacturer of recombinant and plasma-based proteins to treat hemophilia and other bleeding disorders; plasma-based therapies to treat immune deficiencies, burns and shock, and other blood-related conditions; products for regenerative medicine, such as proteins used to promote hemostasis and wound-sealing in surgery; and selected vaccines.
Baxter's Medical Products business manufactures products used in the delivery of fluids and drugs to patients. These include intravenous (IV) solutions and administration sets, premixed drugs and drug-reconstitution systems, IV nutrition products, infusion pumps and inhalation anesthetics. The business also provides products and services related to pharmacy compounding, drug formulation and packaging technologies. In addition, the business is a leading provider of products and services for home-based dialysis therapies for patients living with chronic kidney disease, and also manufactures and distributes products for hemodialysis, a therapy that generally takes place in a hospital or clinic.
Canadian Manufacturing Presence
In 1940, Baxter established its first Canadian manufacturing facility in Acton, Ontario. In 1957, the facility moved to Alliston, Ontario. More than fifty years later, Baxter’s Alliston facility continues to manufacture products that help save and improve patients’ lives.
The 180,000-square-foot plant, which currently employs more than 400 people, manufactures life-sustaining intravenous (IV), nutritional, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis solutions - 99 per cent of which are sold in Canada. Baxter’s Alliston facility is the longest standing parenteral solutions plant in Canada and the only Canadian manufacturer of peritoneal dialysis solutions.
Canadian Pharmacy Services
In 1986, Baxter opened the first outsourced hospital admixing service in Canada. Featuring state-of-the-art quality control processes and clean room technology, Baxter’s Central Intravenous Admixture (CIVA) pharmacy service provides Canadian hospital pharmacists and healthcare professionals with parenteral therapies prepared using aseptic techniques. Baxter’s CIVA Pharmacy Services provides a range of ready-to-use intravenous admixtures that encompasses oncology, anti-infectives, analgesics, nutrition, critical care and cardiology.
Canadian Technical Services
Baxter provides customers with comprehensive post-sales equipment support through its Canadian Technical Services depot. The 11,500-square-foot facility, located in Mississauga, Ontario, assists Canadian hospital customers, healthcare professionals and home patients with field and depot service repairs, technical training, service contract management, parts ordering and distribution, and Baxter’s Renal SWAP Program. Through Canadian Technical Services, Baxter works to ensure customer satisfaction by delivering ease of ordering, consistent parts availability, reliable service response turnaround times, prompt response to technical support requests and comprehensive technical training on Baxter devices.
